A ballad  by definition is a type of narrative verse. They can be musical or poetic, most ballads tell a story but that isn’t a necessity to have one. 

A ballad is typically a slow, sentimental song, typically a love song. They mostly have acoustic instruments and are a calmer tune. 


Ballads are a form of narrative verse that can be either poetic or musical. Numerous ballads tell stories, but this is not a compulsory aspect of the form. Several musical ballads are slow, and emotionally evocative.

  • Drum kit

  • Bass guitar (electric)

  • Electric Guitar (distorted)

  • Vocals (and backing vocals)

  • Piano

  • Synthesizer

  • Other instruments are sometimes included…

    • Synthesizer (basically a keyboard, but use the word synthesizer)

    • String section (e.g. violins and cellos)

    • Brass section (e.g. trumpets and trombones)

    • Wind section (e.g. saxophones and oboes)


A ballad is usually a love song, and when not they are a sentimental song. The lyrics tend to tell a story and this is what makes a ballad a ballad.

Ballads derive from the medieval French chanson balladée or ballade, which were originally "dancing songs" (L: ballare, to dance), yet becoming "stylized forms of solo song" before being adopted in England.
